Why won't the changes I make to the master theme apply to all the slides in my presentation?

I can not figure out how to get the changes that I'm making to the new theme I created to apply to the entire presentation. I keep following the directions that are on Google support, but the fonts and colors on my slides are not changing, and it's driving me insane.
