Hey all, my sister is looking for a cheap laptop that can run Photoshop & Illustrator. She's not looking for a Mac yet because of budget reasons - she just wants a competent laptop that she can use to learn the basics of them with. Oh, she wants a webcam too, but I think those come pretty standard nowadays, right?

She ideally wants to keep it around $500-$600, but if it goes higher then that we want one that comes with a free Xbox 360.

Any brand or model recommendations?

Yeah, most of the ones I've looked at have at least 4GBs of RAM, some 6. 6 is probably overkill, but if its worth doing, its worth overdoing, right?

Depends on what kind of work you're doing.

If you're applying filters etc to 2GB TIFF files, 6GB ain't overkill at all. There's a reason I have 12GB in my workstation system as well as multiple drives. I'd hate doing Photoshop work on a laptop, and I don't understand the people who tolerate it myself. Laptops for my taste are either too small in monitor physical space-or are too heavy to really be that mobile. IMHO.

Well I have 8GBs and do a fair bit of Photoshop work and 3D modelling myself but rarely see it go over 4GB of use. But then I don't work with 2GB TIFF files either.

And yeah, I prefer desktops myself, but she really wants a laptop, so who am I to say no?
